Lets start with what these mean?
A Curriculum Vitae (short denomination CV) is actually a Latin name for 'Course of one's life'. Hence a detailed written document of one's educational and professional achievements throughout the life. Emphasizing on academics and depending on your experience this can be as short as of one page or as long as more than 2 pages.
Have some quite mention-able fellowships or memberships? write it here. Want to list your hobbies ? Pen down here. Your awards achievements, accomplishments have one roof to gather...    A  CV.
Largely used to apply for jobs having less then a year of work-ex and for academic jobs, research, scientific or medical fields CV is usually a static document. Basically denoting who you are and what you have done till current period of time.
Resume on the contrary stresses more on skill - set required for accomplishing a particular type of a job . Resume can be tailor made / customized according to the job requirements.  'Resume' is derived from the French word résumé meaning "summary".
Generally 3-4 types of resumes occur.. chronological, functional, combination resume and targeted resume. What and which type to be used and when depends on experience , type of job applying for.
It is always advisable to fit your skill set into 2 pages at max emphasizing on the requirements of employer and yes here's the master stroke suggestion...

'Show how you can help tackle challenges faced by employer' .

'Emphasize where you helped your previous employer to overcome their hurdles.'

'Give Impetus to what you can do for them.'
